How much is too much? Depressants

⚠️⚠️Be aware that combining multiple depressants will greatly increase the risk for overdose, more than the risk of individual substance amounts alone⚠️⚠️

📉Depressants are a class of drugs that lower the activity of the central nervous system, creating a range of effects from euphoria and relaxation to depression of breathing and a lowered heart rate 🩺

🍺Alcohol, a popular depressant, is one of the most commonly used recreational drugs. A standard dose of hard liquor is 1.5 ounces. Lethal B.A.C. limits range from 0.31%-0.45%, though this limit is a bit different for each individual - depending on everything from their weight to their genetics. Consuming larger quantities of alcohol in shorter durations increases the likelihood of alcohol poisoning. Due to the effects of alcohol, such as loss of coordination and blurred vision, this drug increases risk for accidents and injury🍷

💊Benzodiazepines are another class of depressant drugs that includes Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, and Valium. Though they are intended to be prescription only, people do use them recreationally. For example, 0.25-0.5 mg of xanax is typically prescribed for anxiety. An entire bar of xanax contains 2 mg, 8 times the prescription dose. Consuming about 24,000-48,000 times the standard dose of a benzodiazepine like Xanax would be lethal, but when used alone benzodiazepines are unlikely to fatally impact your physical health🧠

💀Though it’s nearly impossible to cause death from benzos alone, when combining both alcohol and Xanax use fatalities become common due to breathing complications🍸

🍬Another depressant is codeine, which is often prescribed for pain relief. A standard prescription is 15-60mg per 6 hours. Consumption of between 500-1000 mg of codeine would be lethal due to liver toxicity👿

⚠️⚠️Stimulants have the opposite effect on the central nervous system. Mixing depressants with stimulants, such as Caffeine or Adderall, will mask the sensations. It’s important to remember that this puts you at a higher risk for an accidental overdose⚠️⚠️
